Richard J. Minto, 82, of Butler, died Tuesday morning, June 28, 2016, at the V.N.A. Inpatient Hospice.

 

Born January 23, 1934, he was a son of the late Martin Minto and Margaret (Daniels) Minto.

 

Richard was a 1953 graduate of Butler High School, where he was active in sports. He was a member of the 1950 undefeated football team and was the 1963 WPIAL diving champion. He was inducted into the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, was an avid golfer and bowler, had organized and ran the Butler County Open for 18 years and had tryouts for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher.

 

He served in the United States Marine Corps. From 1954 until 1957, where his Parris Island team won the all-marines championship in 1955 and his team in Hawaii won the title in 1957.

 

He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Chruch in Lyndora, loved spending time with his family and also telling stories.

 

He was retired from the Armco Steel Plant in Butler, following 37 years.

 

Surviving is his wife, Brenda (Downing) Minto, whom he married July 1, 1960.

 

4 daughters: Kimberly (Robert) Selfridge, Margaret (David) Whitten, Susanne (Bill) O'Donnell, Kathleen (Mark) Iarrapino, all of Butler.

 

Grandchildren: Amber and Emily Selfridge of Butler; Julia Whitten of Carittenden, KY; Ali and Caitlin Whitten of Carbondale, CO; Brook Sequete of Boise, ID; Fallon O'Donnell of Boise, ID; Zachary Kennedy of Los Angeles, CA; Ashley Kennedy of Butler; Victoria and Mario Valletto of Butler.

 

Great Grandchildren: Jakobe, Harper, Kennedy and Everleigh.

 

1 brother, Nicholas Minto.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Minto; 2 brothers, Martin Minto and Edward Minto.

 

Friends will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 East Cunningham Street, Butler, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, at 10:00 a.m., at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 21 Evergreen Road in Lyndora. The Paisius McGrath, Pastor, will officiate.

 

Parastas Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home.

 

In Lieu of Flowers, Donations may be made to the Richard J. Minto, BHS Athletic Scholarship, C/O Farmers National Bank, 100 Bon Aire Plaza, Butler, PA 16001.
