Steve Zavacky, Jr., 97, of Renfrew, died Friday morning, September 15, 2017, at the Sunnyview Home.

Born November 12, 1919 in Lyndora, he was s son of the late Stephen Zavacky and Anna Suchina Zavacky.

He married Julia Pavilisin Zavacky on July 24, 1949, at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora, she died May 10, 2008.

Steve worked at the Armco Steel Plant in the Processing Maintenance Department, retiring after 41 years.

He had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which took him out west at a young age. He was drafted into the United States Army in April of 1942, at the age of 20. His Army basic training was in heavy equipment repair. With 200 specialty men of various caliber they formed the 479th Engineer Maintenance Company and they docked in Calcutta, India. He worked on the Ledo Road repairing machinery needed to complete the road. He was discharged in new Cumberland, PA on November 12, 1945, his birthday.

He was a member of the American Legion #778 for many years as well as the Penn twp. Veteran's Organization. He was instrumental, along with others, in creating the Penn Twp. Vet Memorial sculpture of a stainless steel eagle, called the “Wings of Peace.” He was active in the local VFW, the CCC group in New Castle, China-Burma Group, and as well as a board member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora, where he was a member.

Surviving is his daughter, Jeannette Zavacky of Oceanside, CA.

1 sister, Nora Zavacky of Butler.

A brother-in-law, Steve Pavilisin of Denver, CO., and countless many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 East Cunningham Street, Butler, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, at 10:00 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora. Internment with Military Honor from the American Legion #778 and the V.F.W. #249 Honor Guard, will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mount Chestnut.

Parastas Services will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home.
