John R. Slater, 74, of Butler, passed away, Saturday, October 8, 2022, while residing at the Sunnyview Home.
Born July 16, 1948 in Butler, he was a son of the late Richard R. Slater and Ann (Crevar) Slater.
John had worked at Pullman Standard until the plant closed and then for the Armco Steel Plant in Butler. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Tionesta, spending time with his dogs, also hunting, fishing, camping and gardening.
John had been in the United States Army National Guard for 26 years, where he was a recruiter for 3 years, had been deployed to Tionesta in 1985 following the tornado and has had many trainings throughout the world.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Shaffer.
3 children: John D. (Michelle) Slater, Janice (Russell) Neff and Barry (Raine) Slater.
1 step daughter, Nicole Leight.
12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
1 sister, Karen Shay.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step daughter, Danielle Leight and 1 granddaughter, Haley Leight.
Friends will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 East Cunningham Street, Butler, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, at 12:30 pm at St. Wendelin Roman Catholic Church. Interment to follow with Military Honors in St. Wendelin’s Parish Cemetery.
