Patricia Sloan Obituary

Patricia Ann Sloan, 72, of Butler passed away suddenly of natural causes on Thursday, September 1 while in the comfort of her home.

Born in Butler on July 8, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Madeline (Betres) Esper.

She is survived by her husband Greg Sloan who she married on March 27, 1987.

Patricia was a 1968 graduate of Butler High School where she was involved with theatre directing and production.  She also served the community as a volunteer Candy Striper at the Butler Hospital.

She earned her degree in education from Slippery Rock University the hard way.  She went to night school while caring for her two children.  After obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree, she worked as an elementary school teacher in the Butler Area School District and at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Butler.  She had also earned an Associates of Arts degree from Seattle Central Community College.

Pat was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Paul’s Catholic Church where she previously served as a Sunday School teacher.

She was also an avid runner and ran for many years before she was forced to retire due to injury.  She competed in quite a few local area road races and she did volunteer work for many years in support of the Butler Road Race.

She quietly and passionately supported, spoke for and took action in service to different human rights, animal rights and environmental causes.

She loved to be near the ocean.  Annually vacationing with her husband in Cape May, NJ and spending time in California with her daughter.

She was also a loving and caring “mother” to eight different cats over the years.

Left behind to cherish and remember Pat is her husband Greg, her daughter Jennifer Simpson and son-in-law Tracy Simpson of San Diego, her brother Daniel Esper of Hawaii, numerous cousins, nephews and nieces and, of course, her cats Ellie, Franny, Gracie and Zoey.

Pat was proceeded in death by her parents, her beloved son Matthew Cunningham who passed away on December 2, 2001, her brother Charles Esper, a niece Mia Esper, and her special beloved cat Hobbes.
