Paul Slomer, Sr. Obituary

Paul Slomer Sr., 86, of Penn Township passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, surrounded by family. Born Aug. 13, 1935, in Butler, Pennsylvania, Paul was the son of the late John and Mary (Fedorski) Slomer.

Paul is survived by two sons, Paul (Nicole) Slomer Jr. of Butler, Pennsylvania, and Eric Slomer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, along with three grandchildren: Michael and Alexander Slomer and Julianna (Jared) Hennig. He is also survived by his brother John (Dottie) Slomer of Butler, sisters-in-law Rose Stepula of Seminole, Pennsylvania, and Ruth Ann Michel of Renfrew, Pennsylvania, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Paul was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Eileen, who passed away on Aug. 14, 2018. The two were married at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler on June 21, 1957. He was also preceded in death by his brother Robert (Bob) and his wife Donna, as well as two brothers-in-law, Ronald and Gary Michel and sister-in-law Merilee Geibel.

Following his mother’s death when he was two, Paul was raised by his paternal grandparents at the family homestead in Lyndora, Pennsylvania. He remained forever grateful for the values they instilled in him, which fostered his love of family and strong work ethic.

Paul attended Butler High School prior to joining the United States Army in 1952 and serving in the Korean War. During his service, Paul attained the rank of Sgt. 1st Class at an unprecedented young age.

After finishing his enlistment, Paul was a proud union construction laborer for over 40 years. He worked most of his career for the Ken McKinnis and C. T. Dumbaugh construction companies. He was an avid plantsman and could often be found outdoors tending to his lawn and vegetable garden. Paul had a passion for sporting events and was a baseball and harness racing enthusiast. He was very active in coaching youth baseball in the Penn Township and Butler communities.

Paul and Eileen were long-time members of the Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church and were active in the Penn Township community where they resided for more than 60 years.
