Richard Leroy “Dick” Fitzpatrick, Sr., of Butler, passed away Wednesday evening, April 13, 2022, at the age of 86, while under the care of the Butler VA Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 3, 1935 in Butler, son of the late Edward and Margaret (Duddy) Fitzpatrick.
Richard left school to join the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War on the destroyer USS Charles R. Ware. He later got his GED and went on to work at the Pullman Standard Car Company for 27 years until the plant closed, and then worked for Allegheny Axle. In his retirement years, he worked for HP Starr.
Richard was a member of All Saints Parish - St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, VFW Post #249 and American Legion Post #778. For many years he enjoyed bowling and especially golf, belonging to leagues at Stoughton Acres and Lake Arthur Country Club. He played golf into his 80’s and most memorable were his 2 holes in one. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed cutting grass, and especially enjoyed Acquaviva’s Pizza and a cold beer and hot sausage at the Lyndora Hotel.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Ballon) Fitzpatrick.
5 children: Richard (Karen) Fitzpatrick, Jr. of Butler, Lorraine Hilliard and her fiancé Hubert “Boo” Dewey of Butler, David (Kim) Fitzpatrick of East Butler, Kelly (Gary) Keeling of Gibsonia, Colleen Fitzpatrick (and his favorite buddy Marley) of Butler.
7 grandchildren: Sarah (Shane) McAfee of Chambersburg, Melissa (Justin Liebler) Hilliard of Butler, Beth Fitzpatrick, Julie (Bill) Schuller, Jessica Fitzpatrick and her fiancé Chris, all of East Butler, Allison Keeling and Matthew Keeling, of Gibsonia.
8 great grandchildren: Brennan, Jonah, Cameron, Katie, Kylee, Dylan, Natalie and Jacob.
1 great great grandson, Weston.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wm. Blaine McKee, and numerous brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles.
His family would like to extend a special thanks for the wonderful care provided by Tammy, Wanda, Hope Hospice, and the Butler VA.
Friends will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 East Cunningham Street, Butler, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday. A Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday morning, at 10:00 am, at the Funeral Home. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum of Butler County Memorial Park.
