Stephen Cupps Obituary

Stephen E. Cupps, 63, of Butler passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.  Born September 24, 1960 in Butler, he was the son of the late Francis and Virginia (Shaffer) Cupps.

Stephen retired from AK Steel after 30 years of service.  He was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh sports, and at times needed to be reminded that he was not the coach.  He loved his yearly trips to New York for salmon fishing even though he never ate one in his life.  He loved cars whether they were his own or NASCAR.  After seeing a race in person, he loved to tell people that they needed to experience a live race to appreciate how fast the cars really go.

Growing up he made many lifelong friends at Whippo Playground, which led to his love of softball and becoming a member of various teams.  He was a proud player for St. Paul Church League which led to becoming league champions with a record of 29-5 in 1985.  Playing softball for Cook’s Market at Franklin Field was a highlight of his younger years because many of his childhood friends were part of his team.

Steve was known for telling every doctor, at every visit, that he was “stronger than most men.” During his very long fight, he proved that he was actually stronger than all men.

Steve had a strong faith and was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler.  He loved being outside, listening to the Pirates while grilling steaks for his family.  He was a gardener as well as an expert grass cutter.

Steve is survived by his wife Terry Garcia-Cupps, his children Erik Cupps, Stephanie (Jared) Arienzo, Alyssa (Alexus) Garcia and Lydia (Rachel) Garcia, and his sister, Nancy Cupps and his brother Robert (Susan) Cupps.  Five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his first wife, Lisa (Stevenson) Cupps.

Friends will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 East Cunningham Street, Butler, from 1-3 and 6-8 pm on Thursday.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, at 10:00 am, at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 North McKean Street, Butler.  The Rev. Harry Bielewicz, will officiate.  Entombment to follow in the Mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery in Butler.

In Lieu of Flowers, Donations are to be made to Butler Catholic School, 515 East Locust Street, Butler, PA 16001.
